REVIEW
This volume of stories is a real eye-opener. I found myself gasping as I learned about the medieval history of places I visit, or drive past every day. I was fascinated by the stories of the people, their conflicts and border clashes, as well as the ordinary troubles of love, loss, betrayal. I knew very little about the local history of the area where I live before reading this book and now I want to know more. I will be thinking about all those people as I walk up to Dryslwyn Castle or Dinefwr. I read it very quickly – it’s a very easy read – and finished it wanting to delve further into the lives of the people, as well as the fascinating politics of the age. I think one of the beauties of this book is that it’s a taster. It inspires you to find out more, which is the mark of a good history book.

History books can be notorious for being dry and academic. But this book treats the reader as someone who wants to enjoy historical facts. It is both informative and entertaining. And though it is not afraid to give the gory facts, there are times when it is even amusing. I love reading about our history and this is the sort of book that keeps the interest going. The maps are an excellent idea, as are the lineage diagrams. I loved it.
